General restoration and new conception
In the course of the upcoming general restoration, the building of the Staatsbibliothek (State Library) at the Kulturforum is to be redesigned in accordance with its status as a historic monument, so that it better meets contemporary technical and functional requirements and so that subareas can be reorganized.
The design by Berlin-based gmp Generalplanungsgesellschaft mbH was awarded first prize. The redesign to be developed – also with regard to accessibility – concerns the foyer, the positioning of the cafeteria, the access control area, and the planning of a further entrance to Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, which is intended to respond to the current urban planning situation.
Since the building is considered an outstanding testimony to organic architecture – an architectural style influenced by Antonio Gaudí to Santiago Calatrava – and an icon of modern library architecture, the planning must meet the highest quality standards.
